What’s new in KDE 4.7

Improved Oxygen theme

Long time KDE user will know that the Oxygen GTK theme does not really play well with GTK+ application. In some cases, you have to use the QTCurves theme to render the GTK app. In KDE 4.7, the oxygen icon themes has been improved to provide a seamless blending of GTK app into your KDE desktop.

Updated version of applications

The following applications have been updated to a newer version:

Kontact – better integration with Akonadi Dolphin – able to create and clone repositories, push and pull changes, view diffs Marble- It now has voice navigation support, a map creation wizard, and new plug-ins Gwenview – now comes with the ability to compare two or more pictures side by side Digikam – new features include face detection and recognition, image versioning support and reversed geotagging. Kate – a new Search plugin with the ability to search in files on disk or opened files Okular and many more

Installing KDE4.7

If you are using Kubuntu (or KDE 4.6.x), just add the following PPA and upgrade your system. Overall, you won’t notice much differences in KDE4.7 as most of the improvements are done on the backend. Other than a minor issue with external monitor, you should experience an improve in performance. Note: Kubuntu 11.10 (scheduled to release in Oct 2011) will be running KDE 4.7.
