Since Windows is silently downloading and installing updates, you might be curious to know what updates have been installed on your Windows system or what updates are causing the problems. In those situations it is better to check the Windows update history. This helps you to better understand what updates have been successfully installed or failed to install. As I said before, seeing update history in Windows 10 is pretty straightforward. To start, click on the notifications icon appearing on the bottom-right corner.
The above action will open the Windows 10 Action Center. Here, click on the button “All Settings” to open the Settings app. Alternatively, you can also use the keyboard shortcut “Win + I.”
After opening the Settings app, navigate to “Update and Security.”
In the Update and Security window navigate to “Windows Update” in the left panel. Now, click on the “Update History” link appearing on the right panel under the “Update Status” section.
As soon as you click on the link, Windows will show you all the installed updates. The good thing about this feature is it will clearly show you when the updates were installed along with all the failed update installation attempts.
In the case of failed update installations, Windows will try to reinstall them without downloading the update again. However, if the downloaded update got corrupted, then it may redownload the entire update. Each update will have its own KB (KnowledgeBase) number. To get information about a certain failed or installed update, simply click on the “Successfully Installed” link appearing right under the update. This action will show you the general info which is not particularly useful most of the time.
However, by clicking on the “More Info” link, you can see all the things that an update does directly from Microsoft’s knowledge base site.
If you want to uninstall a particular update, then click on the “Uninstall Updates” link appearing at the top of the Window.
The above action will take you back to the regular Control Panel. Here, select the update you want to uninstall, and then click on the “Uninstall” button appearing on the navigation bar. This action will uninstall the selected update.
Do keep in mind that even if you uninstall an update in Windows 10, it will eventually download and install the update. So, to temporarily stop the update from being installed, either use the Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter or just defer the updates (pro version only).
