Another way to log back into your Windows 10 system is to use a password reset disk. You should set up this recovery tool in advance just in case you lose your password or can’t remember it. Calling Microsoft for support won’t be of use since they can’t help you log back in, so it is best for you to take precaution.

Creating a Password Reset Disk Using USB Drive

To begin, insert any USB drive and use the search bar to locate the “password reset disk” in the Control Panel. It should be very visible.

In case you could not locate it from the search button, go to the Control Panel and click your main user account. Go to “Make changes to your user account,” and you should have the option to create a password reset disk.

For some users, in case the link does not open, you should go to the Task Manager and close a Windows host process called “Rundll32.” This is a Windows command line utility program that can interfere with password recovery, so disable it.

At the next step you can see a “Forgotten Password Wizard” screen which guides you to the disk creation. It does warn you, though, that anyone who has access to your password recovery disk will be able to access your account. Always store your USB recovery disk somewhere safe.

In the next step the wizard will save information about the Windows account in the disk you just inserted.

You will be prompted to enter your current user account password before you reset the disk.

Click next and wait until the status bar reaches 100%. Your password recovery disk is now ready for future use.

Accessing Your PC Using Password Reset Disk

In case you notice that you’re unable to access your system, you will have to click “Reset Password.”

Unfortunately, without your password recovery disk, you can no longer log in to your system. Your choices are to either restart using safe mode or bring out your stored USB drive.

You will see a new screen of the password reset wizard. It suggests that you should already have created a password reset disk in advance.

You must now select the USB disk that was used to set up password recovery.

In the next screen, you will be asked to type a new password. Confirm it twice, and type a new password hint which you should jot down somewhere else.

After completing the password reset wizard, you can now easily use the new password to log in to your system once again.

An Easier Method to Recall Windows Password

In case you don’t want to go through all the above steps to create a password recovery disk, there is an easier way out. Use a password manager to save your Windows password, or save it somewhere only you can access it. You must frequently update your latest Windows password there.
