This new technology alters the look of your photo through algorithms based on machine-learning and neural networks inspired by brainwave activity. Neural networks use object recognition to completely recreate an image, not just add an overlay to it. Here are some currently available apps where AI can create works of art from your photos. I tried them myself with pictures of my dog.
1. Prisma (iOS & Android)
Prisma augments your photos and creates new original versions of your photos with the artistic styles of famous artists like Van Gogh, Picasso, Lichtenstein, and others.
This app uses Convolutional Neural Networks which are designed to simulate the human brain. The CNNs teach deep-learning algorithms how to detect and identify objects in images. This process applies different preset looks that respond to the pixel configuration in your photo and create an entirely new image. The new image downloads with 100% intensity, but you can adjust that in your final image and view the changes using a split view of the picture.
2. Painnt (Windows, Mac, iOS & Android)
The Painnt app not only lets you choose from preset styles to create a photo with an artistic look, but it also allows you many different ways to tweak them for a unique look.
There are over one-hundred different styles to choose from, and they are grouped into seven different categories to make searching easier. Some of the options available to tailor your new images include settings like transparency, contrast, saturation, grain merge, and soft light. You can select a new aspect ratio and download your output in small, medium, large, and original resolutions. While you are changing your photo, look at before and after images by using side by side, split view, or insert images. Upgrading gets you options like HD output, turning off ads, and removing watermarks.
3. DeepArt (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, & Android)
DeepArt uses an original algorithm mixing the stylistic elements of one image to reproduce the content of a different one. To create a new image, upload the one you want to use and choose from eighteen preset styles included with the app. You can even choose another pictures and mix them together.
The app allows you to create unlimited 500px square images for free. It takes a while to work, but the app sends you an email when it’s finished. You can also order custom prints on acrylic glass, high-resolution art prints, and HD videos.
Newer AI-enabled Apps
Newer AI-enabled photo-editing apps are going beyond just creating paintings in a predetermined style. These apps are attempting to see photos the way a human would and create images based on how the AI perceived the picture. Here’s how these apps handled my picture.
4. Cartoonify (Web)
The Cartoonify app works like a robot artist, looking at your image and drawing what it sees. It analyzes the picture and creates a crude sketch of what it thinks is in the pictures. The results from the app prove that this technology has a long way to go because the output looks a lot like something a five-year-old child would draw. But it’s interesting to see, nonetheless.
5. DeepAngel (Web)
DeepAngel uses artificial intelligence to remove certain types of objects from your pictures. It’s still limited in scope because it can only delete certain items like a person, dog, car, or other everyday objects.
To use DeepAngel, you can upload an image or use an Instagram link. Then choose what object you would like to remove. It’s still in the early stages, but you may find the results useful for some projects.
6. GoArt by Fotor (Web, iOS & Android)
GoArt by Fotor is a newer, faster app for turning your photos into images based on famous artists’ styles similar to the ones we discussed earlier. GoArt’s speed allows you to try more styles in less time, especially on the web app.
There are plenty of different styles to choose from in the free version of the app, or you can get a Fotor account and unlock all the options like intensity and removal of watermarks. Artificial intelligence certainly has a long way to go, but these apps show some of the progress it has made over the years through its ability to create art.
